X-Moto merges free gameplay with 2-D effects, and it is primarily playable on Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP. However, it is also compatible with Linux, Mac OS X and Free BSD, as well as a video driver that is able to run OpenGL software. This is an invigorating game for those who love racing, motocross and realistic interaction. Players must push their bike's abilities to the limits in order to complete the harder challenges.

Players enjoy being a part of the X-Moto software development process by using the svn versions. This gives them the ability to report bugs, try out the latest features, and have a say in the future of this open shareware. In addition, users of the svn versions can update X-Moto whenever they like.

Although X-Moto is a 2-dimensional game, it utilizes 3-D hardware acceleration, which gives it added speed. However, the sound effects are a bit meager. Motor sounds, a strawberry pickup audio tone, and an audible alert when a level is won or lost are the basis for the simple soundtrack.

During gameplay, each player chooses a level and attempts to collect as many strawberries as possible. There are two requirements to complete a level: accumulating berries and touching a flower. Amazingly, this free software game is extendable by downloading more than 2,400 user-designed custom levels.

To make X-Moto stimulating, the player finds themselves up against wrecker opponents that they must maneuver around and avoid. These items must be avoided at all costs! Usually, most objects are immobile, except for the physics levels, which sometimes do contain moving items. Additionally, the gamer has the ability to change this on certain levels.

Moreover, the player does not get hurt due to falls but does occasionally lose points by hits to the head, body or bike from a rock or a wrecker item. At that point, the level is over, and the player has lost. Furthermore, there is a replay option, which can be saved and shown in tandem with the current gameplay.

Patterned after the popular physics-simulation software, which is affectionately called Elma, X-Moto plays with the notion of an elasticized motorcycle. Many players simply play at their own speed and concern themselves only with accomplishing the various levels. However, other players, such as those who join online gaming groups, are prone to strive for speed in finishing each journey through a maze of obstacles.

Long-term players, however, almost always strive to beat their own records. Some may even attempt to set world records. This makes X-Moto a fun way to spend leisure gaming hours, as players worldwide will attest.
